CONGRATULATIONS ARE yet again in order to wily racehorse trainer Jim Bolger, who has managed to offload one of his nags for what must be a very tidy sum to an Arabian sheikh looking to make his mark on the sport of kings.

The horse in question is Boundless Ocean, which was bred by Bolger out of his super stallion Teofilo. He won in the colours of the trainer’s missus, Jackie Bolger (aka Mrs JS Bolger), at Leopardstown last month before Sheikh Abdululelah Abdulaziz A Almousa swooped in with his cheque book. Bouncless Ocean is now set to feature in the lucrative Irish Champion Stakes next month.

The Master of Coolcullen has always known how to turn a profit from his breeding operation and he also popped up as a significant investor in Emmeline Hill’s bloodstock gene testing company, Equinome. Denis O’Brien’s Plusvital subsequently took a controlling stake in Equinome, which was also renamed Plusvital, but Bolger remains an investor today.

The December 2020 accounts for the business show accumulated losses of just on €4m.

Maybe Almousa could be tempted to throw in a few bob from his overflowing coffers. The Saudi sheikh’s main company operates in the real-estate sector and he is joined here by his brother, Ibrahim, a venture that is effectively an extension of the sprawling Al Mousa Real Estate group established half a century ago by their father.
