WHAT A remarkably detailed account of last September’s RTÉ board minutes was made available to the Sindo’s Mark Tighe last Sunday. And how prominent was RTÉ director Ian Kehoe in those minutes, with a raft of worried queries and suggestions on the parlous state of the broadcaster’s finances.

Showing an admirable grasp of the overall economy and RTÉ’s finances into the future, Kehoe – a founder, editor and major shareholder along with Tom Lyons in The Currency – was shown to be deeply concerned at various aspects of the station’s “internal financial projections and modelling”. This sounds like just the sort of guy the Government needs to replace outgoing director general Dee Forbes.

BoyleSports has An Post CEO and former TV3 boss David McRedmond as its favourite at 7/4 to take the RTÉ job. Others in contention include TG4 DG Alan Essiemont (3/1) and RTÉ’s strategy director, Rory Coveney (6/1/).

Coveney was mentioned in the Sindo’s story about the RTÉ board minutes as were various other execs, but Ian Kehoe – whose BoyleSports odds for the top are 33/1 – is referred to at least six times in the minutes. Sounds like someone thought the Sindo ought to know about Kehoe’s commitment to and knowledge of public service broadcasting.
